“Only 12% of students who enter kindergarten in Springfield are ready for kindergarten based on our entry assessments,” according to Laura Mendes, supervisor for pre-K – 3rd Grade Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.
The Early Literacy Volunteer (ELV) Program is a unique program designed to supplement the instruction that kindergarten teachers are providing to struggling students. Volunteers work with small groups of students selected through pre-screening and ongoing assessment in order to target instruction in specific areas of weakness. The minimum commitment is one morning a week for at least one hour, but volunteers are welcome to volunteer additional time.
Currently the program is being piloted at Boland Elementary and Zanetti Montessori Schools.
- A two hour training is required
- A Manual and materials are provided
- Check-in sessions and refresher trainings are available
In today’s fast-paced world, children need to learn to read and read to learn at the same time. ELV volunteers help kindergarten students develop a solid foundation to build on.
